Wave Energy
Scientists estimate that harnessing just 0.2 percent of the ocean’s untapped energy
would supply enough power for the world. Reedsport, Oregon has been identified as
an ideal location for a pilot project. Commercial developers are working on a wave
energy park and anticipate someday selling electricity commercially with PNGC Power’s
participation.
Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. (OPT)
plans to launch its first power-generating demonstration buoy off the coast, near
Reedsport, Oregon in 2012. Oregon Iron Works has been working on fabricating the
steel structure of the buoy. If testing and assembly of the buoy remain on schedule,
it’s expected to be deployed next summer.
The first PB150 PowerBuoy wave energy demonstration device will be placed 2.5 miles
off the Oregon coast, near the communities of Reedsport and Gardiner. The Reedsport
OPT Wave Park project is being developed with support from PNGC Power, with significant
funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
